Dampness in the Laundry Room

Washing and drying clothes is a main culprit for producing excess moisture. It’s important to combat the dampness that collects in the laundry room because when left untreated, the air will stay continually damp. This causes the drying process to take much longer, which will likely produce a musty smell.

Here are a few tips to keep the laundry room fresh:

●      Excess moisture needs to be continuously evacuated when you are washing or drying laundry. Condensation on windows, walls and other surfaces is a clear sign of insufficient ventilation.

●      Make sure all appliances are in good working order. Clogged filters can cause leakages and unnecessary energy waste. Dryers always have lint filters, which should be cleaned after every cycle.

●      Regularly use your washing machine at a high temperature setting to remove soap scum and kill mold and  bacteria. Keep the door of your washing machine open when it is not in use to allow the inside of the machine to dry and prevent mold.

●      Considering a new dryer? A modern dryer with a heat pump is more energy efficient and produces less water vapor than conventional models.

The moisture in your house, especially in the laundry area, will build up without ventilation and a way for humid air to escape. Over time, this problem can lead to odor and musty air. If you are unable to continuously ventilate the room, you should consider using a dehumidifier.
